Ever since the Fund was initially offered in 1929, we have adhered to four major principles for investing in the energy and natural resources sector. One, we invest in companies that have leading market positions. Two, we look for companies run by superior management teams. Three, we invest for the future. And four, we insist on strong financials at our portfolio companies. Using these time-tested principles, we have done our best to deliver solid returns and distributions of income and capital gains to our shareholders.
Remarkably, the very same strategies that were set in the early years continue to make sense today – three-quarters of a century later. We continue to apply a conservative, disciplined, long-term approach. We rely on our in-house analysts to steer our investment decisions. Experience and diligent research enables them to understand the dynamics of individual companies and their investment prospects. Our research team and portfolio managers also grasp the bigger picture, the macro world and our non-stop demand for energy.
Active management also allows the Fund to take a more diversified approach than index-based energy sector ETFs can. We strive to see that the portfolio is balanced with appropriate investment opportunities, rather than being weighted solely on the basis of market capitalization. Since we endeavor to avoid moving in and out of investments due to fads or volatility, we are able to stay the course and maintain our sights on the longer-term view of the market.
We also continue to watch our expenses very carefully. Our distinctive internal management structure keeps our expense ratio significantly lower than most mutual funds. So, with less expenses taken off the top, your returns are just that much greater.
In all of these areas, it is easy to see that every action we take exemplifies our adherence to our bedrock investing principles. Time after time, year after year.
